Overview

The Promise was built as an immersive migration narrative that used spatial media to move the audience from passive observation into emotional proximity.

Developed by Innovation, the installation combined 360 video, exhibition design, and volumetric capture to create a documentary experience rooted in testimony, memory, and movement across borders.

Rather than treating migration as a distant subject, the project translated lived accounts into an environment people could enter. That made it effective both as an artistic work and as a framework for public dialogue inside cultural programming.

The Origin

## An immersive documentary about migration,
_memory, and human movement._

The Promise emerged during a period of experimentation in Miami as NDA explored how immersive media could deepen documentary storytelling. The work included interviews such as the account of a Mexican migrant crossing the Nuevo Laredo river and the testimony of one of the first five Cuban rafters to row into Miami.

Those stories gave the project emotional gravity. The goal was not spectacle. It was to use immersive form to create a more immediate relationship between audience and testimony.

Strategic Collaboration

## Volumetric capture added a real artifact,
_not just visual atmosphere._

The installation was enriched through collaboration with [HistoryMiami Museum](https://historymiami.org/), where a raft used by seven Haitian rafters was captured volumetrically and integrated into the experience. That decision added authenticity and made the installation feel materially connected to the histories it referenced.

This is where the project reveals an important NDA capability: immersive media was not treated as a layer added at the end. The full experience system combined narrative research, technical production, and cultural framing into one coherent environment.

Exhibition Evidence

## The images matter because they show
_the installation as a physical, navigable environment._

The raft artifact supports the case’s emphasis on material authenticity. The installation connected immersive media to real migration objects and histories.

The wider exhibition view makes the curatorial dimension clearer: this was a designed public environment, not only a headset-based experience.

The VR boat image shows how the audience was physically positioned inside the story, which is what made the project stronger than a conventional documentary screening.

Cultural Impact

## Festival recognition validated the work,
_but public dialogue was the deeper outcome._

The Promise was officially selected for the [New Media Festival](http://www.miaminewfestival.com) and the [Interactive Media Festival](http://www.filmgate.miami) in 2018, and it also competed for Best Interactive Doc at The Pink Kraken awards.

Those recognitions matter because they confirm the project performed at the level of international interactive exhibition standards. More importantly, the piece helped trigger discussion around migration, cities, displacement, and the social role of emerging media.

## Related questions

What types of training scenarios are best suited for virtual reality?

VR excels in scenarios where physical practice is dangerous, expensive, rare, or impossible to standardize: emergency response and safety drills, high-hazard equipment operation, surgical and medical procedures, scenario-based decision training (leadership, negotiation, de-escalation), and onboarding for complex facilities or systems that trainees haven't yet visited.

How does VR training compare to traditional e-learning in knowledge retention?

Multiple studies across military, medical, and industrial training programs show VR retention rates 20–40% higher than passive video or e-learning for procedural and decision-making tasks. The difference is driven by active engagement: VR requires the learner to make decisions and complete actions, producing stronger memory encoding than passive watching or reading.
