The third runGame hackathon gave its teams 30 continuous hours to build a video game around a theme they only learned at the start. The Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez hosted it on October 16, 2019, with private companies backing it, New Discovery Media among them.
Being a strong programmer was not a requirement to enter; wanting to build something with other people was. Three talks ran alongside the build: José Antonio Rodríguez of Tecza Technologies on making a game from scratch, Jonalex Herrera and Liz Pasillas on "La importancia de la creatividad práctica en la Industria 4.0", and Omar Saucedo, then Microsoft México's tech community engagement manager, closing with "¿Juárez tiene futuro?"
The audience was the digital design and interactive media students of UACJ's IADA — the people who would be working in the region's industry next. Pasillas wrote afterwards that the point of showing up was to argue Ciudad Juárez can be known for technical talent rather than cheap labour.
